Butterfly Valley Underground City (Vertical Underground City)
Located on the steep slope of Butterfly Valley on the Hisarcık – Mount Erciyes road, this unique structure is a must-see. After passing through a tunnel entrance amidst the sheer cliffs, the city greets you with a spacious area. A column sits in the center of this spacious area. Above this level is another floor, which I believe was used as a kitchen in the past (I found pieces of terracotta).
The adventurous part of the work lies in the lower levels. The structure descends four more levels via stairs. On the -1st level, there are walls built with neatly cut stones, and also five rooms opening onto a central corridor. After the -4th level, there is a tunnel that descends to -54 meters. We went all the way to the end of the tunnel, which is carved out with stairs, but its end appears to be closed. According to our calculations, the end of the tunnel should lead to a stream flowing in the valley floor. With a little work, the end of the tunnel could easily be opened.
We are calling on the authorities to declare this area a protected site as soon as possible. This unique vertical underground city may be one of a kind.
